John R. Jones

John R. Jones, 57, passed away April 26, 2016 at his home in Gunnison, following a brief illness. In John’s fi nal months, he found solace and peace in his faith and family.

John was born Aug. 11, 1958 in Lafayette, Ind., the son of the late Janice Bachleda and John D. Jones.

At a young age, John moved with the family from Lafayette to Mooresville, Ind. They lived there until John was in 7th grade and the family moved to Tipton, Ind.

John wrestled and played football in school. Early on, he was captivated by archery, motorcycles and the outdoors. He was always reading Thoreau and Kerouac and loved music, teaching himself to play guitar.

John graduated high school in 1976 and attended Indiana University in Bloomington for one year, after which he began traveling. He lived in Tennessee for awhile before returning to Lafayette.

In 1981, John married the love of his life, Trish. They had two children, Brandy and Jared.

The outdoors always played a prominent part in John’s life. While living in Lafayette, he frequently participated in bass fishing tournaments and loved hunting for ducks and whitetail deer. He also enjoyed training Labrador retrievers to be hunting dogs.

Later, John became interested in road cycling, adventure racing, mountain and rock climbing — the latter of which led to trips to Red River Gorge in Kentucky and the mountains of Colorado.

John went to work for the Caterpillar machinery plant in Lafayette in 1984. He started by sweeping floors but worked his way up through the ranks of the company in the decades that followed. In 2000, Trish and John moved to Peoria, Ill., after he took a job as a department supervisor. Next, the couple headed to Dyersburg, Tenn., where John worked as a facilities manager.

In 2004, they moved to Asia, where John helped Caterpillar grow new business on the continent. During this time, he and Trish enjoyed sightseeing and traveling throughout Asia and Europe.

After returning to the states in 2008, John went to work for a short while in Aurora, Ill., before being given the coveted task of finding a location to build a state-of-the-art excavator plant. Following much research, John selected Victoria, Texas, where he and Trish moved in 2010.

John made many close friends while living in Victoria and in his leisure time enjoyed hunting, fishing and motorcycling.

Always one to share his wisdom, John made a point over the years to mentor numerous colleagues, family and friends — many of whom are now managing businesses all over the world. Helping people grow both professionally and in life was John’s passion.

On Feb. 29, 2016, John retired from Caterpillar. The same month, he and Trish bought their retirement home in Gunnison, where they moved in April — fulfilling John’s lifelong dream of living in the mountains of Colorado.

John was preceded in death by his mother, Janice (Robert) Bachleda and a sister, Jo Anne, who died as an infant.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Trish; daughter Brandy Braggs and her husband Shonnie of Peoria, Ill.; son Jared Jones and his wife Deirdre of Gunnison; father John D. (Verlina) Jones of Monticello, Ind.; sisters Jo Ellen (John) Bishop of Rutland, Mass.; and Jill Gamewell of Ingleside, Texas; sister-in-law Cathy (John) Ubelhor; and brothers-in-law, David Wortman and Bernard (Barbara) Wortman.

John also leaves behind two grandchildren, Nick and Liana; seven nieces and nephews, Trevor, Lauren, Evan, Collin, Brad, Belinda and Kim; and two great-nieces and a greatnephew.

At John’s request, the family is not having a memorial service. Instead, he urged those who cared about him to go to church with their families and say a prayer. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Warrior’s Weekend, an annual fishing event for wounded military personnel, in Port O’Connor, Texas, by visiting warriorsweekendtx.wordpress.com.

William (Bill) Dorricott

For a variety of reasons, I’ve decided to write my own obituary. Seems to me we build the fi rst part of our life building our resume and the last part building our obituary. Perhaps we should start earlier on our obituary since it deals more directly with our spiritual journey and our service to others. When people speak to me regretfully about this abrupt end to my wonderful 82 years, I quickly remind them that my father died at 27 years old so I’m well over quota.

I’ll attempt brevity in this message so people won’t doze off . If I were to have a wish for all of you it would be that you continue to reach out to those in your life, and be supportive and comforting to all your realm. And that you are sensitive to the rhythm of life, good and bad, as it comes to you each day.

I came into the world on Aug. 16, 1934 and have been extraordinarily cared for by many people, far too numerous to name. My proudest achievements are the four children, I know of, who have been absolute delights in my joyful life. The biggest thrill in my life was visiting the Korean War Memorial in Washington, D.C. and serving in Korea.

Pay it forward. Good thoughts, Bill

Virginia Elizabeth (Clark) Easley, 99, passed into eternal rest on Monday, May 30, 2016 at the Gunnison Senior Care Center, Gunnison, Colo.

Born in Chelsea, Okla. on Feb. 1, 1917, youngest child of William A. and Lillie (Berry) Clark, she lived a full life, surrounded by friends and family wherever she went. She was forever proud of her Native American Cherokee heritage. Virginia was one of the young women who helped the war effort, packing ammunition and explosives during World War II.

She married Willis A. “Dick” Easley in 1940, and raised their four sons in Yukon, Okla. She attended nursing school in Vinita, Okla., and over the years the couple had various businesses, including a drive-in diner, a feed and seed store, and Dick’s insurance business. In earlier years, she belonged to many clubs, including the Garden Club, Magna Carta and DAR. She loved gardening both vegetables and fl owers, and was an avid bird enthusiast.

For over 50 years, she split her time between Oklahoma and the Colorado summer place until she made Almont, Colo. her permanent home. They started camping above Crested Butte on the advice of friends, and then had the first trailer placed at Th ree Rivers Resort when the Cranors expanded to include a mobile/motor home park. Over the years, more relatives made summer homes in Almont, and this led to a week-long Clark-Easley family reunion for the past 30 years. She was well known for her cobblers, some with Cherokee Country huckleberries and others with Colorado fruits like peach, apricot or apples. Her hospitality included her sons and grandson’s fishing and hunting buddies. Everyone called her “Mom” and a plaque in the kitchen proclaimed her “Cobbler Queen” of Almont, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1981; her parents; her eight siblings and their spouses; and two sons Jerry and Joseph Easley. She is survived by sons W. A. “Dick”, Jr. (Bonnie) of Shawnee, Kan.; and William (Christy) of Mustang, Okla.; daughters-in-law Dana Easley of Moore, Okla. and Laura Easley of Olathe, Kan.; 10 grandchildren; 18-plus great-grandchildren; and two-plus great-great grandchildren.

Numerous nieces and nephews and their families have enjoyed their Aunt VA’s hospitality over the years in Yukon and Colorado. She would gladly play dominoes, gin rummy, or other card games, so there were many late nights at the Easley place.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, June 11, at First United Methodist Church in Yukon, Okla., with interment to follow at the Clark family plot in the Chelsea Cemetery in Chelsea, Okla.

The family wishes to extend deep gratitude to the Gunnison Hospice team (especially Cathy, Krista and Denise) for their excellent care and concern during Virginia’s time spent at the Senior Care Center.
